We understand that Pride Month can mean many different things depending on who you ask. For some, it is a time for celebration and parades. For others, it’s a quiet moment of reflection on how far we have come as a community. Here at Anita & Joe’s, we believe that at its very heart, Pride is about the same thing that Southern hospitality is about: making sure every single person feels seen, valued, and fed.
We know that planning an event or even just organizing your family’s weekly meals can feel like a lot of pressure. You might worry about finding a caterer who truly understands your values or feel stressed about whether your guests will feel comfortable. We want you to know that we are happy to take that weight off your shoulders. We love to create spaces where everyone feels they belong, and we believe there is no better way to show that than through the vibrant colors of our summer harvest.
In the South, the table is where everything happens. It’s where we tell stories, where we heal, and where we build our families: the ones we’re born into and the ones we choose. This June, we’re looking at the beautiful colors of the Pride flag and seeing them reflected in the incredible produce we find at our favorite local farmers' markets.
Seeing the Rainbow in Our Southern Roots
We’re so lucky to live in the Pacific Northwest, where the summer bounty is just starting to wake up. When we look at the six colors of the traditional Pride flag, we don’t just see symbols; we see the very ingredients that make our Southern recipes so special. We love to use these seasonal gifts to tell a story of inclusion and joy.
Red for Life: Heirloom Tomatoes and Sweet Strawberries

The color red in the Pride flag stands for life. In our kitchen, nothing says "life" quite like a heavy, ripe heirloom tomato that’s still warm from the sun. We understand that finding that perfect, juicy tomato can be the difference between a good meal and a great one!
We love to use these reds to bring energy to your table. Whether it’s a fresh tomato pie or a bowl of sweet strawberries tossed into a summer salad, these ingredients represent the vitality of our community. When we provide personal chef services, we make sure to source the liveliest reds possible so your family feels that burst of summer energy in every bite!
Orange for Healing: The Southern Peach
Orange represents healing, and if there is one fruit that can heal a bad day, it’s a Southern peach. We're happy to bring these fuzzy gems into our menus whenever we can. Peaches remind us of the sweetness that comes after a long struggle.
We know that sometimes life can be tough, and we believe that a shared meal can be a form of healing. We love to work with you to create desserts or savory glazes that highlight this warm, comforting color. It’s our way of saying that we’re here to support you and nourish you through the good times and the difficult ones too.
Yellow for Sunlight: Sweet Corn and Golden Desserts

Yellow stands for sunlight. In Southern cooking, yellow is everywhere! It’s in the golden kernels of sweet corn, the flaky crust of a cornbread muffin, and the rich, creamy desserts we love to serve at the end of a long dinner.
We understand that you want your events to feel bright and cheerful. We're happy to use these "sunlight" ingredients to bring a glow to your catering spread. Whether it’s our signature corn succotash or a lemon-infused treat, we want your guests to feel the warmth of a summer afternoon, no matter what the PNW weather is doing outside!
Green for Nature: Our Beloved Fried Green Tomatoes

Green represents nature, and for us, there is no ingredient more iconic than the green tomato. We love to take these firm, tangy fruits and turn them into something crispy and delicious. It’s a way of honoring the natural cycles of growth and the beauty of things that aren't "ripe" yet.
We believe that everyone is on their own journey, and we want to meet you where you are at. Just like a green tomato has its own unique flavor and purpose, every member of the LGBTQ+ community brings something essential to our collective table. We're happy to feature these greens as a reminder of our connection to the earth and to each other!
Blue and Purple for Harmony and Spirit: The Berry Harvest

Blue stands for harmony and peace, while purple represents spirit. We find these colors in the deep blues of blueberries and the royal purples of blackberries and plums. These are the ingredients that round out our menus and bring a sense of balance to our meals.
We understand that hosting can be stressful, but we're here to help you find that harmony. We love to create berry-filled cobblers or fresh fruit displays that add these calming, spiritual tones to your event. It’s about more than just food; it’s about the peace of mind that comes from knowing your guests are being taken care of by people who truly care about them.
There’s Always a Seat at Our Table
At Anita & Joe’s, our mission has always been to bring the flavors of the Deep South to the Pacific Northwest. But it’s about more than just recipes passed down through generations. It’s about the spirit of those recipes. Anita and Joseph Malone taught us that a kitchen should be a place of love and that a meal should be an invitation.
We want to be very clear: our table is open to everyone. We are proud to support the LGBTQ+ community, not just in June, but every single day of the year. We understand that finding inclusive businesses is important to you, and we want to be your partner in creating experiences where everyone feels welcome.
We love to work with you to plan the event of your dreams. Whether you are looking for an intimate dinner party or full catering for a large wedding, we are happy to customize our menus to reflect your story and your values. We don’t believe in "one size fits all" because we know that every family and every celebration is unique.
Reducing the Stress of Planning
We know that the logistics of catering can sometimes feel like a puzzle. You might be worried about hidden charges or the guesswork of how much food to order. We’re here to tell you that we don’t like those things either! We believe in being transparent and making the process as easy as possible.
We love to guide you through the planning process. We'll help you pick the right seasonal items: like those vibrant summer tomatoes: and ensure your menu is perfectly balanced. We want you to be able to enjoy your own party! When you work with us, you aren't just hiring a service; you're gaining a team that is dedicated to your joy.
Why Inclusion Matters to Us
You might wonder why we feel so strongly about connecting our food to Pride. It’s because we believe that food is the ultimate bridge. When we share a meal, we’re sharing a piece of ourselves. If someone feels they have to hide who they are, they can’t fully experience the joy of that connection.
We're happy to use our platform to say that your identity, your family, and your love are worth celebrating. We believe that a more inclusive world is a more delicious world. By celebrating the "Colors of Community," we're celebrating the diversity that makes our neighborhoods so wonderful.
