The Legendary Bradford Watermelon: A 150-Year-Old Secret in the PNW
We understand that when you think of summer in the Pacific Northwest, your mind might jump to fresh berries or crisp apples. But for those of us with roots in the Deep South, summer isn't truly official until we've shared a cold, dripping slice of watermelon. We know it can be frustrating to browse the grocery store aisles, looking at those perfectly round, uniform melons, and feeling like something is missing. If you've ever felt that store-bought fruit tastes more like water than actual flavor, we want you to know that you aren't alone.
We're happy to tell you that there is a world of flavor out there that most people have forgotten. At Anita & Joe's, we're passionate about bringing authentic Southern traditions to our neighbors here in the PNW. One of the most incredible stories we’ve ever encountered is that of the Bradford Watermelon. This isn't just a fruit; it's a 150-year-old family legacy that was almost lost to history forever. We love to share these stories because they explain the "why" behind our own dedication to authentic recipes and the memories of Anita and Joseph Malone.
A Tale of Survival: From a Prison Ship to South Carolina
The story of the Bradford Watermelon is like something out of a movie, and we're so excited to share it with you. It all started back in 1783. A man named John Franklin Lawson was an American Revolutionary War soldier held on a British prison ship. While he was there, a Scottish captain gave him a slice of watermelon that was so sweet and delicious, Lawson knew he couldn't let the experience end there. He saved the seeds in his pocket and brought them home to Georgia.
Eventually, those seeds led to the creation of the Lawson watermelon. In the mid-1800s, Nathaniel Napoleon Bradford: affectionately known as "Chief" Bradford: crossed that Lawson melon with another local variety in Sumter County, South Carolina. The result was the Bradford Watermelon. We think it’s amazing that a single act of saving seeds could lead to what many considered the finest late-season melon in the South for nearly 80 years.
Why Flavor Lost to Convenience

We know it can be confusing to hear about a "legendary" fruit that you've never seen at the supermarket. We're happy to explain the simple, and somewhat sad, reason why the Bradford disappeared. It all comes down to the skin.
You see, the Bradford Watermelon was bred for one thing: pure, unadulterated flavor. It has a dark green skin that is so thin and tender you can practically scratch it off with your fingernail. Its red flesh is described as "spoon-tender," and the rind is sweet and soft enough to eat.
However, as the world moved toward industrial farming in the early 1900s, the priority shifted from "how does it taste?" to "how well does it ship?"
Commercial growers needed melons with thick, tough rinds that could be stacked in crates.
The fruit had to survive long rail and truck journeys without bruising or bursting.
Soft-skinned varieties like the Bradford simply couldn't handle the rough ride.
By the 1920s, the Bradford Watermelon had vanished from seed catalogs and store shelves. For nearly a century, historians and plant experts assumed it was extinct. We understand how frustrating it is when convenience takes precedence over quality, which is why we work so hard to keep our own authentic Southern recipes alive today.
The 150-Year Secret
The most beautiful part of this story is that the Bradford family never let their legacy die. While the rest of the world forgot, the family kept growing their melons on their land in Sumter County. They saved the seeds every single year, passing them down through six generations. They even planted their fields at least a mile away from any other watermelons to make sure the seeds stayed pure.
In 2012, Nat Bradford: the great-great-great-grandson of the original breeder: was researching his family history and realized that the "extinct" melon historians were looking for was the same one he grew up eating every summer. We're so moved by this kind of dedication because it mirrors our own commitment to honoring the memory of Anita and Joseph Malone. We don't just cook food; we're preserving a heritage of joy and flavor.
The Unsung Hero: The Watermelon Rind

We love to educate our clients on the versatility of Southern ingredients. One of the things that made the Bradford so prized was its rind. Most people today throw the rind away, but in traditional Southern cooking, it’s a delicacy! Because the Bradford rind is so tender, it’s the perfect candidate for pickling.
When you work with us for your personal chef services, we love to introduce you to these kinds of traditional touches. We believe that every part of the ingredient has a story to tell. Pickled watermelon rind is sweet, tangy, and has a crunch that you just can't find anywhere else. It’s that extra layer of care and history that turns a simple meal into a true culinary experience.
